For decades, the transatlantic relationship has been an important pillar of the democratic world order, but over the past 3 years, that order has changed: Germany has been forced to adapt to a new, more transactional partnership – and calls to assume a greater role on the global stage. The coronavirus pandemic has laid bare political and structural fault lines in the U.S. and globally. Will the U.S. and Germany find a way back to a closer partnership, or drift further apart?
